About This Site

Pick Sustainable publishes plain-spoken reviews, comparisons and how-to guides for reusable, low-waste products that fit an ordinary household: countertop compost bins for kitchen scraps, reusable silicone food bags, beeswax food wraps, wool dryer balls and Swedish dishcloths. Every product here is something used in a real kitchen, laundry room and backyard garden, and we say just as plainly what did not work.

Product Safety

Reusable products need cleaning to stay safe. Wash silicone food bags and dishcloths thoroughly between uses, especially after raw meat, poultry or fish, and let them dry completely so mold does not grow. Do not use beeswax wraps for raw meat or fish, and keep them away from heat sources such as ovens, stovetops and microwaves.

Countertop compost bins hold food scraps that can attract fruit flies and grow mold. Empty them often, replace odor filters as the maker recommends, and wash the bin regularly. Compost piles in the yard should be kept away from children's play areas and handled with gloves.

Wool dryer balls can get hot in the dryer; let them cool before handling and keep them away from very young children, who could treat them as toys or choking hazards once they break apart. If you add essential oils, use only a few drops, let them dry before running the dryer, and remember some oils are irritating to skin or harmful to pets. Anyone with a wool, lanolin or beeswax allergy should check materials before use. Always follow each manufacturer's care and safety instructions.
